How do you define a function for a name game in Python?
I want to write a function called isnotspace that takes a character as its argument. If that character is a space, it should return False. If it’s not a space, it should return True.
For example:
print isnotspace(”Q”) should output true because it has no spaces.
print isnotspace(” “) should output “false” because it has a space
print isnotspace(”.”) should output “true” because it has no spaces.
You could write this function as:
def isnotspace(ch):
return ch != ‘ ‘
But usually you don’t need to invent low-level functions like this in Python. Python comes with a bunch of higher-level string functions that will do things like break a string into a list of words, or find a certain sequence within a string, or remove a certain sequence from a string — basically, almost of the activities that you might be trying to synthesize by classifying a character as “not a space”. If what you’re trying to build here does anything like those kinds of activities then it’d be worth spending some time looking through the ‘String’ and ‘String Methods’ section in the Python library reference, at http://docs.python.org/library/string.html and http://docs.python.org/library/stdtypes.html#string-methods
